I would exchange a 45 minutes MRT ride to a 1.5 hours bus ride. Many people wouldn't agree with me because it's the usual "What? More than an hour. So long..." But i genuinely feel that an hour is just right and more than an hour is alright if time is in your hand. So i am here to prove my point.
#1 - People taking MRT are busy and in a rush! They crowd around the entrance area before the train arrive to make sure that they will board the train before it moves off without them. Forgetting the fact that people in the train would want to alight without the train moving off without them too! Which is worse? See! This people are in such rush that they cant think right.
#2 - Too add on, changing from MRT to LRT (vice versa) is madness. Especially if you are going in the opposite direction of the peak hour crowd. More than often, i am stuck in those situations and a person fighting to move across the passageway against a hundred of dying-to-go-home is crazy. (Reminds me of the game i played when i was young: changing the car lane to ensure that your car doesn't hit the rest of the vehicles on the road)
#3 - Bus taking allows plenty of reflecting moment and relaxation time. I was on 188 from Habourfront alone yesterday and i spot a beautiful sunset. Awesome! And i love people spotting and interesting-thing spotting while on the bus. Whereas on the train, you are stuck high in the air or in a tunnel with nothing more interesting than the inconsiderate souls around you.
Sadly, my concession has ended and to reduce transportation time, i am using more train services recently. And not purchasin one till i find a job or something. HELP!!! Such a short break really make it harder for job search. I don't want to be broke for Boston!
